هذه السحابة الجبارة تحيط بنظامنا الكوكبي ، وتمتد لمسافة تبلغ نحو ثلاث سنوات ضوئية ( أي حوالي 30 مليون مليون  كيلومتر ) من الشمس ، ومن ثم تكون بعيدة جداً عن تأثير جاذبيتها ، ويُطلق على هذه السحابة ( سحابة أورت ) على اسم مكتشفها العالم الهولندي جان أورت ( 1900 – 1992 ).

 تُعد سحابة أورت بمثابة مخزن للمذنبات طويلة الأجل ، التي يُقصد بها تلك التي يستغرق دورانها حول الشمس والعودة ما يزيد عن مائتي عام ، وقد يصل إلى ملايين السنيين.

ولكن كيف تكونت سحابة ( أورت ) في الأصل؟

يعتقد غالبية علماء الفلك أن محتويات سحابة ( أورت ) كانت تدور بالقرب من كواكب المجموعة الشمسية العملاقة ، أي المشتري وزحل وأورانوس ونبتون ، ومع مرور ملايين السنيين ، وبتأثير دوران هذه الكواكب الجبارة اندفعت إلى منطقة محددة في الفضاء ، هي مكان سحابة ( أورت ).

وفي دراسة حديثة اتضح أن سحابة ( أورت ) تحتوي أيضاً بجانب المذنبات على مجموعة من الكويكبات الصخرية ، التي تقترب أحياناً من كوكب الأرض وتهدد بالاصطدام به.
