اُكتشف كوكب ( بلوتو ) في عام 1930 وهو الكوكب التاسع بُعداً عن الشمس ، ومنذ ذلك التاريخ مازال علماء الفلك في حيرة من أمر هذا الكوكب الأسود ، وما يُحدثه من اضطرابات قوية في سير الكواكب العملاقة ، ولعله مكون من معادن ثقيلة للغاية.
( بلوتو ) هو الكوكب الوحيد في كل المجموعة الشمسية ، الذي لم تقم إحدى المركبات الفضائية الاستكشافية بزيارته ومحاولة التعرف على أسراره.
وقد حسب علماء الفلك مدار كوكب ( بلوتو ) من واقع أرصاد كثيرة ، واتضح أن مداره شاذ كبير الاستطالة ، ويُتم دورته حول الشمس في نحو 240 سنة أرضية ، ومتوسط بُعده عنها حوالي 5914 مليون كيلومتر ، ولما كان كوكب ( بلوتو ) بعيداً جداً عن الشمس فهو لا يعكس إلا قليلاً من أشعتها خاصة ً وأن قطره لا يتعدى 2274 كيلومتراً ، لذا يبدو لنا على شكل نقطة مضيئة في سماء حالكة السواد.
يدور كوكب ( بلوتو ) حول محوره في ستة أيام ، وتبلغ درجة الحرارة فوق سطحه 228 درجة مئوية تحت الصفر ، ويتكون سطحه الجليدي في معظمه من صخور وجليد النتروجين ، مع نسب ضئيلة من الميثان وأول أكسيد الكربون ، وهناك غلاف جوي رقيق جداً للكوكب ، يتجمد ويسقط على السطح عندما يبتعد الكوكب عن الشمس.
