يطلق على كوكب عطارد ( ابن الشمس ) لأنه أقرب كواكب المجموعة الشمسية إليها ، إذ يبلغ متوسط بُعده عنها نحو 57,9 مليون كيلومتر.
وسطح كوكب عطارد موحش نحاسي اللون ، تتخلله خطوط كثيبة رمادية متجعدة وفوهات براكين ، وهو صخري وله مركز صلب ، ويتميز سطحه بوجود حفر هائلة ناتجة عن ارتطامات أجسام فضائية به مثل النيازك.
من المعروف أن كوكب عطارد يدور حول محوره دورة كاملة في نفس الفترة التي يدور فيها حول الشمس ، لذا فهو يواجه الشمس بوجه واحد فقط بصفة دائمة ، أي أن أحد وجهي عطارد ( نهار ) أبدي ووجهه الآخر ( ليل ) أبدي.
وبسبب قربه من الشمس تتغير درجة حرارة سطحه أكثر من أي كوكب آخر ، وقد يصل الفرق بين درجتي حرارة ( النهار ) و ( الليل ) إلى أكثر من ستمائة درجة مئوية ! إذ تصل درجة حرارة الكوكب في ( النهار ) إلى نحو 430 درجة مئوية ، بينما تهبط أثناء ( الليل ) إلى 180 درجة تحت الصفر !
ويوجد بمركز كوكب عطارد حديد ، يمثل ثمانية بالمائة من كتلة الكوكب ، وحول المركز غلاف من الصخور ، ويدور كوكب عطارد حول الشمس ببطء شديد ، و ( اليوم ) الواحد فوقه – أي من شروق الشمس إلى الشروق التالي – يعادل 176 يوماً أرضياً.
وعلى الرغم من أن الأيام طويلة جداً ، إلا أن ( العام ) فوق كوكب عطارد قصير للغاية ، إذ أن عطارد يستغرق 88 يوماً أرضياً فقط ، كي يُتم دورة كاملة حول الشمس ، ويبلغ قطر كوكب عطارد 4878 كيلومتراً.
تُعد المركبة الفضائية ( مارينر 10 ) في عام 1974 هي الوحيدة التي قامت بدراسة مفصلة عن كوكب عطارد ، وقامت بتصوير نحو أربعين بالمائة من سطحه عندما كانت على بُعد ثلاثمائة كيلومتر منه.
