إذا تطلعت إلى السماء في ليلة صافية ، لبدا لك ما يشبه المحيط من الفضة ، يجري خلال الفضاء متألقاً فسبحان الله الذي أبدعه وخلقه ولو دققت النظر لوجدته يتكون من نقاط ضوئية دقيقة ، يبلغ من الصغر والخفوت ما يحُول دون تمييزها كنجوم مستقلة ، ويجعلها تبدو على هيئة غبار لامع ممتد في كبد السماء ، وهذا ما يُعرف بمجرة ( الطريق اللبني ) أو ( درب التبانة ) .. وهي المجرة التي تضم مجموعتنا الشمسية ، بالإضافة إلى حوالي 200 ألف مليون نجم.
المجموعة الشمسية عضو في هذا التجمع الهائل من النجوم ، ومجرتنا من النوع اللولبي ، لأنها على شكل قرص لولبي سميك المركز وقليل السُمك عند الحافتين ، يبلغ قطر مجرة ( الطريق اللبني أو درب التبانة ) حوالي مائة ألف سنة ضوئية ، والسنة الضوئية مقياس طولي يُستخدم في قياس المسافات الهائلة بين النجوم ، ويمثل المسافة التي يقطعها الضوء خلال سنة كاملة ، مع العلم بأنه يقطع مسافة ثلاثمائة ألف كيلومتر في الثانية الواحدة ، وتُطوق مجرتنا أذرُع حلزونية تتكون من الغاز والغبار الكونيين.
ولكن كيف استطعنا معرفة شكل مجرتنا ؟
من العوامل المهمة التي ساعدت العلماء على تصور شكل مجرتنا ، معرفتهم بجارتنا مجرة ( المرأة المسلسلة ) ، التي تبعد عنا بنحو مليوني سنة ضوئية ، إذ أن كل العوامل الواردة منها تدل على أنها شبيهة بمجرتنا ، ولأننا لسنا وسط هذه المجرة الجارة ، لذلك نستطيع أن نراها من بعيد وبوضوح ، وكأننا نرى صورة مجرتنا في المرآة.
هكذا عرفنا أن مجرة ( الطريق اللبني أو درب التبانة ) ذات نواة مركزية تحتشد فيها النجوم المسنة أما القرص المحيط بالنواة فهو مكون من نجوم شابة ، تتخللها غيوم كثيفة من الغبار الكوني ، الذي يُعد ( حضانة ) للنجوم التي تولد باستمرار.
