أول صورة فوتوغرافية تحت الماء التقطها ويليام طومسون عام 1856 ، وتقدم بها لجمعية الفنون بلندن.

وكان طومسون قد وضع الجهاز في قاع خليج ويماوث على عمق ستة أمتار ، وأبقى على العدسة مفتوحة لمدة عشر دقائق ثم أغلقها حيث كان يتحكم في ذلك من فوق سطح الماء.

وفي العام 1880 قام الفرنسي لويس بوتان أستاذ علم الحيوان بتطوير فن التصوير تحت الماء عندما صمم جهازاً معقداً للإضاءة بفلاش مغنيسيوم تحت الماء ،

وقد نشر مجموعة الصور التي حصل عليها بهذه الطريقة عام 1900 في ألبوم ، لعله الأول من نوعه.

وبعد عشر سنوات صمم الأميركي موريس بوينغ كاميرا مائية أوتوماتيكية لتصوير التكوينات الجيولوجية عند أعماق تتراوح بين أربعة آلاف وسبعة آلاف متر.

وقد أمكن بطريقة مماثلة رصد موقع حطام الباخرة ” تيتانيك” في عرض المحيط حيث غرقت.
