عمل بيرتيلو أستاذاً أولا ً لمادة الكيمياء العضوية في كوليج دي فرانس ، ثم عمل مسئولا ً عن الدفاع العلمي لباريس سنة 1870 بسبب خبرته الواسعة في المتفجرات.

كما شغل منصب وزير الخارجية ،

كانت له مساهمات هامة جداً في الكيمياء الحرارية للدرجة التي يعتبر بيرتيلو مؤسسا ً عند ثماني مئة ضغط جوي لكنه لم ينجح بسبب عدم ضغط درجة الحرارة

وصنع جهازاً لقياس الحرارة الكامنة للبخار ،

واكتشف عدداً من الأصباغ المستخلصة من قار الفحم.

وقد أشار بيرتيلو إلى إمكانية تثبيت النيتروجين بفعل التفريغ الكهربائي وبفعل البكتيريا في التربة الطينية.

استطاع أن يحضر عدداً من المركبات العضوية الهامة وبذلك هدم الحاجز الذي كان قائما ً بين الكيمياء العضوية وغير العضوية.
