( بالإنجليزية : Robert Hutchings Goddard )‏

بروفيسور ، وفيزيائي ، ومخترع أمريكي

الميلاد : 5 أكتوبر 1882 ورسستر ، ماساتشوستس – أمريكا

الوفاة : 10 أغسطس 1945 ( 62 سنة ) بالتيمور ، ماريلاند – أمريكا

سبب الوفاة : سرطان المريء

شغف روبرت هتشينجز جودارد بالصواريخ منذ الصغر . . ولم يخف شغفه على أحد في بلدته وستر في مساتشوستس بالولايات المتحدة الأمريكية . .

ولكن الشغف وحده لا يكفي .. إذ لا بد من وجود الموهبة ولا بد من توفر الدأب . . وقد اجتمعت الشروط الثلاثة جميعها لروبرت جودارد.

ذلك أن روبرت لم يكن قد جاوز الثانية والثلاثين حين عاد مدرسا ً للفيزياء في جامعة كلارك في بلدته سنة 1914 ، وحينها سجل جهازين وصاروخين . . وهي من تصميمه وصنعه.

وقد أجرى جودارد تجاربه الأولى سنة 1926م باستعمال وقود سائل.

واتخذ من مزرعة عمته إيفي حقلاً لتجاربه.

ونجحت التجارب ، وفوجئ جودارد بالأوامر التي صدرت إليه من دائرة البوليس وحظرت عليه إطلاق الصواريخ في الولاية مساتشوستس . .

ذلك أن الضوضاء التي أحدثها صاروخه ، أزعجت الناس وأفزعتهم .. فشكوه إلى سلطات الشرطة.

لا عجب إذن أن حرم المخترع الطموح الدعم الرسمي الذي حظي بمثله الكثيرون ممن كانوا دونه نبوغا ً وكفاءة ،

والذي هو بأمس الحاجة إليه ، وشعر بالحسرة لعدم ظفره به.

غير أن مشاعر المرارة تلك لم تدوم طويلاً .. فقد شاءت الأقدار أن يسمع الطيار شارلز لندنبرغ عن جودارد ومواهبه ..

فحدث أحد الأغنياء الصناعيين والمحسنين بشأنه . .

فلم يتردد هذا الغني المحسن وهو دانيل جوجنهايم في منح جودارد مبلغ 50.000 دولار.

كان سنة 1927م وهي السنة التي قطع فيها لندنبرغ المحيط الأطلسي منفردا ً للمرة الأولى في التاريخ.

وما أسرع ما أنشأ جودارد محطة لتجاربه في صحراء نيومكسيكو .. بعيدا ً عن الناس واعتراضاتهم ..

وراح يبني الصواريخ ويطلقها كما يشاء.
