إزالة الفوسفور من الحديد المنصهر

سدني جلكريست توماس مخترع انجليزي ( 1850-1885 ).

بدأ توماس حياته كاتبا ً في دار للشرطة.

ثم أقبل على دراسة الكيمياء في كلية بيركبك Birkbeck  ،

وتمكن توماس من استحداث طريقة لإزالة الفوسفور من الحديد المنصهر في قلاب بيسيمر Bessemer Converter

وقد كان لهذا الاختراع أثره الواضح على صناعة الحديد في القارة الأوروبية عموما ً.

أما انجلترا فلم تستفد من ذلك كثيرا ً ، بسبب انخفاض المحتوى الفوسفوري في خامات الحديد البريطانية في ذلك الوقت ، باستثناء خامات كليفلند.
