كان ابن يونس ، أبو الحسن علي بن أبي سعيد عبد الرحمن بن أحمد بن يونس بن عبد الأعلى الصدفي المصري ، الفلكي والرياضي العربي مخترعاً بارزاً في عصره وينسب إليه اختراع بندول الساعة
( الرقاص ) وحركته المتراقصة المنتظمة

( والبندول عبارة عن ساق أو عصى طويلة معلقة ينتهي أسفلها بثقل له وزن مناسب يساعد العصا على التأرجح بانتظام إلى الجانبين في تردد ثابت )

وهذا الاختراع لم يقمّ أحد باختراعٍ مماثل له سوى الهولندي كريستيان هيوغنز وذلك في عام 1656.

ولهذا يُنسب اختراع رقاص الساعة لهذا العالم الهولندي إجحافا ً بحق المخترع العربي ابن يونس.

ففي مطلع عام ألف وستمائة ، لفت نظر العالم الإيطالي غاليليو ، تأرجح كاتدرائية بيزا ، كان قد قام بإصلاحه خادم الكاتدرائية.

ولقد لاحظ هذا الفيزيائي الكبير أن زمن الاتجاحه الكاملة للسراج كان ثابتاً ومستقلاً عن سعة التأرجح.

وما هذا السراج الذي لاحظه غاليليو إلا نواس من النواويس.

فالنواس جسم صلب قابل للنوسان ( أي التأرجح ) حول محور لا يمر من مركز ثقله.

وهذا المحور أفقي في غالب الأحيان ، ولو أنه قد لا يكون كذلك.

ومن أمثلة النواس رقاص الميقاتية ، ومطمار البناء ، وعاتق الميزان إذا جرد من كفتيه ، والإبرة المغناطيسية المعلقة على محور.

ويمكن صنع النواس من جسم صلب مربوط بخيط ، يثبت طرفه الآخر بنقطة ثابتة ، أو من صفيحة معدنية ثقبت من النقطة ( م ) بعيداً عن مركز الثقل ( مر ) ، فيتزن هذا النواس إذا وقع مركز الثقل ( مر ) تحت نقطة التعليق ( م ) على خط شاقولي.
